Hatesune Miku: Colorful Stage! Is a mobile game available for Android and iOS developed by the studio Colorful Palate and published by Sega Corporation. This game combines familiar rhythm gameplay with a visual novel format to tell the stories of several young bands seeking stardom. To unlock new episodes in the visual novel format, players can play through songs, level up characters, and their groups. There are also various online and co-op modes for players.
For those who don’t know Miku and friends, they are the latest greatest high tech virtual reality uhm idols, for lack of a better word. I saw Miku probably close to ten years ago now, maybe even longer ago, when she opened for Lady Gaga. I love Lady Gaga, but that’s neither here nor there. I had a mild interest in Miku since I’m a huge weeb / otaku / anime obsessed fan. But I’ll say Miku in person is not good if you’re up in the rafters. Couldn’t see her clearly and had to look at the big tv screens instead – and I had prepared myself by watching Youtube prior to the concert, so I was disheartened because it was basically just like watching her on Youtube. I’m sure if you sit close enough it’s amazing and probably looks like a real person.
Our first impression when we first played the game was that we knew right away that this game was presented well and smoothly. You will be greeted by Miku and introduced various introductions to the game. While waiting for loading and downloading, each "band" is presented with artwork which in my opinion is very good and perfect for a rhythm game like this.
Speaking of the rhythm elements of Hatesune Miku: Colorful Stage!: the songs are very fun and even addictive! Playing them on different difficulties gives an added element of newness each time they are played. In my opinion, this game would have been very fun with this mechanic alone, but the visual novel aspect is also a fun, complete game inside a game. Playing each mode of the game is required to advance in the other, but it never feels tedious or arbitrary. I found myself playing the rhythm sections hoping to unlock more story, but was also excited to return to the songs after playing through the visual novel section. The elements are tied together very well.
You can do multiple-player games or single-player games. Spend time after each song talking to townsfolks and earn diamonds. Use that currency to draw new cards into your hand. Level up the band members. Unlock more stories and events. Play a guitar hero dance dance revolution rock band type of rhythm game. Rinse and repeat. Play a song then look for people in town to interact with and repeat. Level up your cards and build the best band you can. Unlock new costumes and items to boost your band.
The gameplay is actually very simple. There are only three things to pay attention to, namely Tap, Hold, and Flick. If you've ever played "Bandori" you're probably already familiar. The difference is, notes in this game cannot be enlarged and sometimes there are notes that look really small even though they are still in the same box. So in terms of the level of difficulty, in our opinion, this is a little more difficult than its competitors.
Overall, Hatesune Miku: Colorful Stage! offers a content-rich experience, with some very fun gameplay intertwined with interesting story. I would give this mobile game an 8/10, based on the few drawbacks like multiple downloads and a bit of confusion when initially starting out and in some menu screens, but generally, I really enjoyed playing it. This game will definitely be staying on my phone, and I anticipate continuing to play it whenever I’ve got an extra minute.
